Blind-Free-Maharashtra

Diabetic Retinopathy Project – Blind Free Maharashtra

After the pandemic, the Foundation re-started its work in the field of Diabetic Retinopathy through the “Blind Free India” initiative, beginning activities from Mumbai. At present we are implementing the “Diabetic Retinopathy Project – Blind Free Maharashtra”. As a part of this project, we are working in Mumbai urban slums with a team of six social workers who survey around 150 slum households daily, classify patients above 40 years of age, and identify diabetic patients. This includes the study of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and biomarkers for identifying Vision Threatening DR.

Another, far more impactful goal of the mission is to identify the exact triggers that lead to Diabetic Retinopathy in some persons but not in others with the same diabetic condition. If we can isolate these factors, we will be able to treat the root cause and thus contribute to achieving our mission of Blind Free India. Many of our complex tests are designed for this purpose.
